THE ARGENTA READING SERIES

HIGH SCHOOL WRITING CONTEST

Presented by the William F. Laman Public Library System of North Little Rock

THE CONTEST IS CURRENTLY CLOSED. FOLLOW US ON FACEBOOK/INSTAGRAM FOR INFO ON FUTURE CONTESTS.

Winner will receive $1,000, and three other finalists will receive $500 each.

ELIGIBILITY:

THE CONTEST IS CURRENTLY CLOSED.

Entrants must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Must be a student in grade 10-12 at an Arkansas high school or have earned a GED within 12 months of the contest entry deadline.

  • Must attend an accredited Arkansas college or university after graduation.

  • If chosen as a finalist, entrants must be able to read the piece in front of a live audience at Argenta Reading Series in North Little Rock on March 14, 2020.

  • Must meet submission requirements listed below.

 

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS: 

THE CONTEST IS CURRENTLY CLOSED. To enter, email one piece of original, unpublished prose writing—fiction or creative nonfiction—to guy@argentareadingseries.com with the subject line: ARS Writing Contest 2020. Academic work will not be considered unless it has a creative bent. Works should be between 1,000-3,000 words in length. Send file as an attached PDF, not a Google Document. 

FORMATTING:

Please use Times New Roman, 12-point font, single-spaced. Include page numbers and the title of your piece on each page. Include a title page that lists the following:

  • Title of Work

  • Declaration of Fiction or Nonfiction

  • Name

  • Email Address

  • Phone Number

  • High School (If GED, list GED)

  • Expected Graduation Date (GED Date)

  • College Planning to Attend

 

 

DEADLINE:

Entries for the 2020 contest must be received by 11.59 p.m. January 31. Finalists will be notified no later than February 15, 2020.

Should the winning student not attend a qualifying school within a year of winning the contest or graduating from high school (whichever comes later), he or she will forfeit the prize money. Depending on quality of submissions, some or all prizes may not be awarded.

Final decisions regarding all matters of the contest will be made at the discretion of ARS Director Guy Choate.
